How Parent Teacher Associations Can Be More Inclusive

Parent-teacher associations (PTAs) can be more inclusive in a number of ways. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Make sure that all parents feel welcome and included in the association. This can involve actively reaching out to parents from diverse backgrounds.

  2. Encourage diversity within the leadership of the PTA. This can involve making an effort to recruit leaders from diverse backgrounds and promoting inclusivity within the leadership team. Schools are often filled with students from various demographics such as income, race, and religion. Make sure your PTA encompasses everyone in your community.

  3. Make sure that the PTA’s activities and events are inclusive and welcoming to all. This can involve providing interpretation services for non-English speakers, making sure that events are accessible to people with disabilities, and considering the needs of all families when planning events.

  4. Use inclusive language and be aware of cultural sensitivity when communicating with parents. This can involve being open to input and feedback from all members of the community.

  5. Work with school administration and staff to ensure that the school is inclusive and welcoming to all students and families. This can involve advocating for policies and practices that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.

SoshWallet knows how diverse the world can be, we want all voices heard! Make sure that your Parent Teacher Association is not only accountable financially - but also socially!
